The Uncommon Page 2
A Simple Statement
This brass plaque states, “ALL THINGS
HAPPEN FOR A REASON.”  So very true.  If
we only knew the reasons….  I suppose this
family has deep faith and trust in the Almighty.

Let’s Go Home
The Smiths were born the same year and died two
years apart, sharing, we trust and hope, pleasant
company, love and companionship.  “LET’S GO
HOME,” three simple words composed from just ten
letters, full of power and meaning.  The brass marker
may represent Yosemite Falls, although the actual
Falls cascade through a broader ledge.  The artist may
have taken this liberty, I presume, to work around the
names.  The additional brass circle of a fisherman is a
common icon.

This very unusual stone raises questions.  Sam would have
been 48 when Mary was born; at a minimum, he would’ve
been 60 when Mary was 12, as some girls have married at
that age.  It is more likely that she is a daughter.  Diane
Siniard (who sent this photo) suggests that “INDIN” is
missing an “A” which would make it “INDIAN” (and is likely
considering “indin” has no English meaning) and the three
“K’s” to the side indicate the Ku Klux Klan.  However the
KKK is unlikely to have admitted an American Indian.  The
central design certainly represents an infantry association.

A voice from the tomb after Mother
Who will come to keep above us.
Lying oh! so white and still.
Underneath the skies of summer,
When all nature’s pulses thrill
To a new life, glad and tender,
Full of beauty, rich and sweet.
And the world is clad in splendor.
That the years shall e’er repeat.
Who will think of white hand
Laying on a still and silent breast,
Never more to know of sighing,
Evermore to know of rest?
Who will care?  No one can tell us.
But if rest and peach befall,
Will it matter if they miss us,
Or they miss us not at all.
Not at all.
